Kidney Disorders

Can be detected through urinalysis

Bright's Disease

  • inflammed nephrons

  • toxins enter and alter nephron's permeability

  • proteins and lg. molecules can enter

    • creates an osomotic pressure drawing water into nephron which makes one pee more!

  • Appear cloudy and postive for protein

Kidney stones

  • salts and minerals buildup to form crystals

    • happens in very basic or acidic environment

  • Blood, back pain, and stinky pee

Diabetes Mellitus

  • water stays in nephron b/c a high sugar [  ] is in the blood which gives an osmotic pressure that opposes solute osmotic pressure

    • SO BASICALLY: the solutes can't get out, so water doesn't want to get out either

Diabetes Insipidus

  • defect in ADH production

  • pee will be very pale b/c high [water]

    • Recall that ADH is the hormone which controls kidney's water reaborbtion: well now there's none of that so that means lots of water in nephron, therefore always have to go pee

Hormone Disorders

Anterior Pituitary

Pituitary dwarfs : when not enough GROWTH HORMONE released when kid

Pituitary giants: too much GROWTH HORMONE made (tumor)

Thyroid

myxedema: face swelling

goiter: low idodine, which is low thyroxine making which means too much TSH made to make a enlarged thyroid

hyperthyroidism: high T4 production therefore high metabolism

hyopthyroidism: low T4 level therefore slow metabolism
