The Human Genome is organized into CHROMOSOMES: a protein and DNA mix called Chromatin
When there is 200 nucleotides (monomers) DNA coils around stabilizing proteins called Histones --> they attract b/c the phosphate group on DNA is negative and histones are positive
8 histones and DNA = Nucleosomes
6 nucleosomes = Solenoid / chromatid fibres
95% of the human genome is non-coding as it's filled with variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs)
-
These are repeating base pairs, example: TAGTAG
The repeating, non coding DNA is DEFENSE
-
Telomeres are at the end of the chromosome for protection
-
They are sacrifical b/c when radiation attacks it erases them and b/c they code for nothing it don't matter
-
Therefore a longer telomere = longer life
-
-
Centromeres hold the strands together at the centre
